Laptop Buying Guide

What to Consider When Purchasing a Laptop

Having a laptop is one way of increasing efficiency in your work or school work if you are a student. The main reason why consumers prefer laptops to desktops is their portability which allows working from any location. There are a lot of laptop varieties in the market all designed to perform varying tasks. The laptop you choose should have the features needed for the intended use. Users are therefore required to make a wise purchasing decision because laptops are not simple to upgrade like desktops. Below are some of the purchasing factors you should consider so that you purchase the right laptop for the job.

Laptop Operating System
Most laptops come with an inbuilt operating system hence saving you the cost of purchasing an operating system. The operating system you choose may depend on the intended use of the laptop or just to fit your taste. Most people use windows, but there are also other operating systems such as Mac which is exclusive for Apple Laptops. It is also advisable to choose a laptop with an operating system you are familiar with because a new one will require some time to familiarize with.

Laptop Screen Size
The laptop screen size you choose will depend on how you intend to use the laptop. Most standard laptops have a screen size of between 14 inches and 15.6 inches, but there are also bigger and smaller sizes. People who prefer portability can go for laptops with smaller screen sizes for easier packing and lightness. Another essential feature in a laptop screen is its resolution. You may need a higher resolution if you intend to use the laptop for entertainment such as movies and games or your work involves a lot of graphics.

The Performance
Performance should be the main factor in making the purchase decision. The performance of a laptop is determined by features such as the processor, the RAM and the graphics card. For the processor, a good laptop should be from core i3, i5 and i7.The suffixes don't represent the number of processors but represent the processor's performance level. So expect an i7 to perform better than an i3. Apart from considering the cores, it is important to check the computers generation. The processor manufacturer (Intel) always updates their processor chips every year and buying the latest model is a plus to the performance. Earlier computers had two physical cores but the latest models have up to six physical cores. Unless if you run complicated tasks, a laptop with i5 processor will perform most of the daily tasks.

When it comes to RAM, most laptops will range 4, 8 and 16 GB. RAM is also a key determinant of your computer speed and can be upgraded. For basic computing needs, a ram of 8 GB is enough, but you may be required to cash more for the 16 GB RAM if you intend to perform memory-intensive tasks such as video editing and graphics designing. Another essential feature under performance is the computer's storage, having a computer that cannot hold all your data can be stressing, and that is why you should look for a laptop with enough storage space.

Laptop Battery Life
As stated earlier, the main benefit of having a laptop is its portability. A laptop without a reliable battery is not portable enough because you have to stay close to a source of power. A good laptop battery should be able to serve you for six hours though the battery life will be affected by the type of tasks the computer is performing when on battery. You should expect a lower batter life than the one stipulated by a manufacturer because manufacturers test their batteries when computers have no running tasks.

Your Budget
All the features above are the determinants of a good laptop, but your budget is the key determinant of what you will buy. Your budget will help you compare the features and choose the laptop with the features that suit you and is within what you can afford. If you are under a tight budget, only go for the computer with the basic functionalities because some of the features may not be necessary for the tasks you intend to use it for.
